Let’s face it living in the South we love our shade, plants and landscaping. But are we doing more long term harm than we are good?
Yes plants block direct sunlight and can help with utility bills, but they also hold in moisture. And when left alone, can cause serious damage to your home. Now that it is the end of the growing season it’s a great time to get out and inspect your plants, trees or shrubs.
Below are some pictures of what plants can be hiding.
Trim back any plants, trees or shrubs that are in direct contact with your home. Another area to review is your exterior doors. Water coming off the roof hits the ground or patio and splashes up on the bottom of doors and trim. This is an area that frequently has water damage or rot. Awnings are a great solution to help prevent this type of damage. Even something as simple as a door mat will help prevent some of the water from splashing up on the frame.
